Family History: Both Silvia and John were alive and well during Remus' childhood and adolescent years, spending all their money to find a cure for his 'affliction'. Although they loved their son dearly, living poorly on the fringes of society began to take its toll on them. They became bitter and distant with their once pride-and-joy, blaming him for their new life-style while at the same time telling him it wasn't his fault. They still loved him, but they were angry and felt helpless. His mother began to see him more and more as the monster everyone claimed him to be to make things right in her head, to make it okay that she had to lock up her little boy every month. That she couldn't help him when he screamed in pain. Slowly, that mindset took over, and she began treating him more coldly throughout the month rather than just around the full moon. His father was guilt-ridden, turning to alcohol to avoid his problems.
Of course, Remus already had it rough before he was made a werewolf. His mother was a muggle and his father a wizard. John Lupin's relationship with his family was already strained because he married Silvia, after Remus became a werewolf they were completely disowned.
Silvia had ran away to be with John, her family positive John was some no good occultist leading their daughter down the path to satanism. Or something along those lines.
Both regretted the choices they had made. Both regretted the end result that was Remus.
When Remus was twenty-five his father died of alcohol poisoning.
His mother died of unknown causes two months later. Remus always suspected she somehow got her hands on a potion the muggle medical examiners weren't able to recognise.

Personal History: After leaving Hogwarts Remus began to travel in order to learn more about dark creatures, including werewolves. He sold everything of value to go on to a wizarding University in Romania where he studied Defense Against the Dark Arts as well as what they offered in Dark Arts. Since most Dark Arts can't legally be taught, he educated himself on the subject not wanting to be left ignorant. He managed to get his Teaching License at age 30 after much debate with the ministry. He made enough money to survive as a tutor for children with afflictions other teachers wouldn't touch - such as lycanthropy. He still owes a substantial debt to the University, Gringotts and a few muggle loan companies.
Romantically, he's been in only a few relationships, all relatively ill-fated. Most ended once his 'furry little problem' was revealed. One actually made it past that and went on to last six more months - Remus' longest relationship. After that they found their lives were going in different directions. Besides that, Remus felt incredibly guilty simply being in a relationship. They broke it off on civil terms, remaining friends afterward. Overall he has spent the majority of his life single.
